ST HELENS is to share in a £100million pot being spent across the country to boost flood protection on roads, Chancellor Philip Hammond announced yesterday (Wednesday).

In his autumn statement, the chancellor said a total of £170m would be spent nationwide on boosting flood protection for homes and transport, with more than 5,000 homes and businesses being better protected under the plans.

Mr Hammond allocated £100m to improve road resilience to flooding, with part of this being made available to areas that experienced severe flooding last winter, including St Helens, Bury and Leeds.

At the time of going to press, there were not details available of the specific areas where improvements would be made.

A statement from the Treasury said: "Last winter saw widespread disruption on the transport networks, with thousands of passengers and road users impacted.

"This funding will ensure communities across the country are protected against increasingly extreme weather, so they are safe in their homes, can get to work and open their businesses."
