A HIGH school is calling on volunteers to help with the creation of a commemorative garden inspired by the memory of one of its students who died earlier this year.

As the Star reported earlier this year, St Cuthbert's Catholic High School is developing the memory garden following the death of Jessica Davies, 16. It is hoped the venue will be opened by Christmas.

The garden will also honour 13-year-old Carl Eriksson, who tragically died following a short illness after becoming unwell on Christmas Day in 2012 and Monica Gallimore who was the school's principal before she died aged 64 following a short illness.

Work on the garden began during a staff wellbeing session in the summer term and detailed plans created by The Urban Jungle Landscape Company have been released.

Simon Stevenson-Black from the company said: “We were delighted to be invited by the school to create this space.

"We felt it was important to reflect the school’s identity in the garden and create a quiet space filled with flowers and shrubs with benches that can be used for reflection, with a gardening area where students will be able to grow fruit and plants.”

Cath Twist, St Cuthbert's head teacher, said: “When we announced that we were creating a garden the school was overwhelmed with the positive support it received.

"The school would like the local community to work with us to help create the garden. The garden will commemorate all those who were part of the school community, including past students and staff who passed away whilst at the school.”

The school is seeking the support of anyone whose family attended Cuthies, lives in Parr or knows of someone who passed away while at St Cuthbert’s.

Anyone who would like to be involved by providing supplies or making a contribution to the appeal, can contact the school on 01744 678123 or email postbox@stcuthberts.com.
