THEY are always there when you need them, know just how to turn that frown upside down and will more than likely have a Werther’s Original in their pocket.

Grandparents often do not get the recognition they deserve for all the little things they do for us every day, but here at the Star we think it is time that changed.

Ahead of Grandparents’ Day on Sunday, we are launching a search for the town’s best grandparents in order to give them a well-deserved treat.

And the timing could not be better as latest research says grandparents have been regularly coming to the rescue during school holidays.

The poll of more than 8,000 over 50s shows that one in eight grandparents looked after grandchildren once a week over the summer break while a further one in eight has child minding duties twice a week, according to statistics from Saga Car Insurance.

The winners will pick up a meal for two at the Eccleston Arms, a £25 voucher for Larkins restaurant and a pair of tickets for a Saints match.

All you have to do to enter is send us a picture of your grandma or granddad (or the two together) with a short explanation why they are simply the best.

Please include your name, address and phone number as well as your grandparents’ full names, ages and address.

Entries can be sent in via our Facebook page or email them to hannah.bargery@nqnw.co.uk.

The competition is open to grandparents who live within St Helens boundaries. The winners do not have to be a couple.

Deadline is October 13.

Usual terms and conditions apply.
