AN "emotional and stirring" night of music was held in honour of a long-term DJ who has been diagnosed with terminal leukaemia.

'The Big C Soul Bash' was held at Windle Labour Club in dedication to Fingerpost DJ Malcolm 'Mally' Moore who has been mixing tunes in the town for four decades.

'Mally' was diagnosed with terminal leukaemia and decided donations be presented the staff on Ward 2B at Whiston Hospital who have treated him for his illness.

Hospital staff attended the big night with £2,090 raised by the night for leukaemia research which saw many types of soul played including Northern, Tamba, 70s and 80s disco to modern.

The night at the Dentons Green lane venue saw 'Mally' play a set alongside fellow 'Soul brothers' Chris Wilson and Paul Chisnall.

There was also a raffle and donation auction held on the evening.

"When he was diagnosed with terminal he said 'why not do it'," said Chris, 63.

"Mally attended and he did the first spot and we had eight DJs on the night who donated their time.

"He has been DJing for 40 years and he has done all kinds and has been doing soul for the last four years.

"He has had so much treatment and he has been OK recently with the weather being good.

"It was Mally's whole idea to raise money for the nurses at Whiston on the ward. We've also been all round the bars and clubs and held auctions to raise money for different charities as well," added Chris, who is landlord at the Duke of Cambridge pub on Duke Street.

"Mally got very emotional on the night, it was quite stirring to get everybody together in three weeks time and to raise that amount of money. It was really good."
