A WIRRAL medical centre has re-opened to the public more than a week after closing its doors because of a maggot infestation.

The temporary closure had been in place at Eastham Clinic on Mill Park Drive since August 26 after staff discovered insects on the ground-floor and in the car park.

Patients were informed by a notice on the door advising that the closure was due to "unforeseen circumstances."

Pest control engineers visited the clinic and carried out a full assessment and treatment of the infected areas.

A spokeswoman for Wirral Community NHS Foundation Trust said the cause of the infestation was not believed to have been due to Eastham Clinic but had spread there from a nearby source.

The medical centre reopened today.

In a statement the trust said this afternoon: "We are pleased to advise that as from today Eastham Clinic is open and operational for all our day services including the Walk-in Centre.

"We can also confirm there are no issues attributable to trust in relation to the source of the maggots, and we have taken all necessary steps to ensure that the clinic is operationally ready for services to reopen."
