TESCO staff in St Helens could face redundancy after the supermarket giant announced changes to the way stores operate.

The Tesco Extra on the St Helens Linkway will cease to be open 24 hours a day due to the announced changes.

From Monday, November 7 the store on the Linkway will no longer be open round the clock, instead moving to a 6am until midnight opening time, cutting the night shift when shelves are replenished.

The Tesco Extra store opened in 2011 when more than 100 staff have transferred from the former Chalon Way store.

Tesco say the aim of the change is to run its stores more simply. The supermarket giant added that workers affected by the cuts will be offered an alternative role within the store at St Helens or at an alternative store in the area wherever possible.

The change also means the St Helens store's shelves will be replenished during a day or twilight hours shift.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “Across the UK we’re making some changes in a number of our stores, including our St Helens Extra, to help us run them more simply and deliver the best possible service for customers.

"We understand this may be disruptive for some colleagues and where there have been changes to a colleague’s role we are working with them to ensure they are fully supported.”

Workers at more than 700 stores across the country are being informed of the supermarket’s latest restructuring.

It is understood that more than 2,000 staff could be affected by the changes.

Staff will learn their fate after a 45-day consultation period ends in November.
