IT will always be remembered as the year England lifted the Jules Rimet after beating West Germany in the football World Cup final and a celebration to mark the 50th anniversary is coming to Central Library.

The venue is hosting a fortnight of football fever from this Monday (July 25).

An exhibit of World Cup memorabilia from local enthusiasts featuring Wembley seats, football cards and First Division club programmes from the 1965-66 season will be on display until next Friday (July 29).

Meanwhile, sports historian Alex Service will host an afternoon of childhood football memories on Monday from 2pm with footage of the famous ’66 final.

Then from August 1 to 5 the focus switches closer to home with St Helens Town commemorating its 70th anniversary with an exhibition which will look at some of key milestones over the past seven decades and look at some of the famous faces to pull on the Town shirt, including Bert Trautmann, Bill Foulkes and John Connelly.

The Macron League Challenge Cup will be on show, courtesy of the Hallmark Security Football League which the club lifted in 1972 when it was the Lancashire Combination Championship trophy.

Fifteen years later, Alan Wellens managed Town to their finest hour with an FA Vase Wembley win against neighbours Warrington Town.

A replica of that trophy will be on show along with a host of Vase final memorabilia, with Town's Barry Lowe's Wembley blazer, match shirt and his FA Vase medal on show.

Also, the George Mahon Cup, the club's first trophy success against Runcorn at Prescot Cables in 1949, will also make an appearance

Town chairman John McKiernan said: “It looks like being a superb event which will provide a great start to the season for us.

"It’s an opportunity for the local community to see a whole range of club memorabilia, photographs, programmes and historical documents from the club and Local History archives.

“The exhibition will also take a brief look at the original club which operated between 1901 and 1928 and we’re always hopeful that some new items and stories about the club are still to be unearthed.

"Looking ahead, this season’s brand new kit will be on show which will see the team play in blue and white for the first time since 1999-2000.”
