MANSION House will be featured in an episode of TV's Most Haunted as the spookier side of its history is explored.

Sitting on Cowley Hill in the heart of Victoria Park, the Mansion House is steeped in history, and, built around 1849 by the late gentleman solicitor John Ansdell, has become an iconic building in the town.

The programme will examine the story of Edith, a maid at the house in the late Victorian period, who allegedly became pregnant after being raped and assaulted and hung herself by throwing herself from the balcony of the main stairs.

The building's more recent uses have included a museum, housing a scary tiger that frightened children of all ages, and for park management by the council.

The house and walled gardens were sold to Age UK Mid Mersey in 1994, who are still based at the venue.

Presenter Yvette Fielding visited the location to film the episode which is to be aired this Thursday night.

"As the programme will report, the staff here have reported early in the morning and late at night feeling a coldness in certain areas, particularly outside by the CEO's office," said a spokesperson for Age UK Mid Mersey, who are currently based at the location.

"We do have a paranormal group which picked up on the activity here and as a result now hold regular meetings here and have also centred on the cellar."

Viewers can watch the episode on Thursday (July 21) at 10pm on the Really Channel, on Freeview 17, Sky 155, YouView 17 or Freesat 160.
