A DRAMATIC crash involving a bus and two cars on Monday evening has become the latest at a town centre accident hotspot.

The collision, which involved an Arriva bus, a Mazda and a Ford Focus, took place at the junction off Shaw Street and Corporation Street close to the Hippodrome bingo and Millennium Centre.

Two drivers and four passengers had to be treated for minor injuries after the crash, with the fire and rescue service removing a door of the bus to enable a wheelchair user to get out.

In the aftermath of Monday's crash Star readers have been calling for action to be taken with the crash being the latest in a string of accidents at the location.

Ashley Hughes wrote: "That's what, six incidents in eight or nine months? As much as I hope that everyone involved is OK, people need to start slowing down and using their indicators in that area as it's been a problem for quite some time and traffic needs to be managed more effectively.

"Is a huge sign warning drivers of an accident hotspot like they have in Warrington enough?"

Angie Lever added: "How many more accidents need to happen in the same spot before something is done?"

When the Star contacted St Helens Council about the matter, a spokesman said: “We are awaiting full details of this accident, but our data confirms that just one other accident, which resulted in personal injury, has occurred at this location in the last three years. However we will continue to monitor the situation.

“We would still urge drivers to take heed of relevant ‘stop’, ‘give way’ and parking restriction signs in the vicinity to help ensure the safety of other road users and pedestrians."

On Monday's incident, a spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said:

"Two fire engines from Eccleston Community Fire Station attended the scene, together with one fire engine from St Helens Community Fire Station and the Search and Rescue Team.

"The incident involved two cars and a bus and all vehicles were on all four wheels when firefighters arrived. Crews used a reciprocating saw to remove the door of the bus to allow a wheelchair user to exit.

"Four passengers and two drivers were treated at the scene by paramedics for minor injuries.

"The driver of the bus was checked at the scene by paramedics and taken by ambulance to Whiston Hospital for further checks."
