A DARTS player overcame the pain barrier to complete an exhausting 24-hour marathon challenge in aid of three causes close to his heart.

David Brown, who is the brother of St Helens professional Alan Tabern, endured two 12-hour sessions over successive days on the oche at the A180 darts shop on Folds Lane.

The proceeds from his efforts will be split three ways in aid of friend Lee Glover, who is fighting Ewing sarcoma, the family of Isaac Haggerty and the fund for four-year-old Jacob Smith who has leukaemia.

The mammoth fundraiser was filmed on a live Internet stream as David got through more than 300 legs of darts over the Friday and Saturday.

And he admitted that he found the challenge even tougher than he had anticipated.

"It was very tough and after I got to 11 o'clock on the Friday after five hours my arm had completely gone," said David, from Sherdley Park.

"That was a struggle to get through Friday and the day after when I woke up I had to do some dumbbells to get some life to them."

Despite the struggles, David says the event was a huge success and is hopeful the proceeds raised can reach close to the £1,000 mark.

"A lot of people played and we probably got £400 in the bucket on the two days alone. I played nearly 400 legs and was just relieved to get through it. I didn't realise it was going to be that tough."

David added: "Alan came and he played me with his wrong hand right-handed and I played left-handed and he still beat me.

"And Lee actually played six legs and had enough strength to play me. He's had some good news recently and the surgeon's confident he can operate to remove the main tumour.

"I'd like to thank Karl and Dawn Holden for letting me use the shop, Neil Devlin for setting up the live stream and Michael Kemp who raised a bit from the Merseyside county match.

"And also everybody single person that came and supported me and Mandy Miller, Alan and Ste Bunting who donated signed shirts and Robbie Green, Daryl Fitton and Lancashire and Yorkshire county darts. Also Andy and Donna Earley at Budget case who sponsored it."
