THE M6 has reopened after earlier closing in both directions following a car overturning.

Two people were trapped in a vehicle travelling on lane three of the northbound section between junction 21a at Croft and junction 22 at Newton-le-Willows this afternoon, shutting the carriageway.

Southbound traffic was also halted as the vehicle overturned on to the central reservation.

The air ambulance attended the scene and a man and a woman released from the vehicle - serious injuries were reported.

All lanes have now reopened, and traffic is returning to normal between junction 19 and 24.

Traffic joining the motorway from the M62 has also been affected.

Traffic was seen queuing for around ten miles due to the ongoing 'recovery work'.

Motorists faced delays of more than one hour on their journey.
