AN 81-year-old man was targeted in an attempted burglary after he was visited by two men he believed to be gardeners.

The elderly resident was visited by the men at his home on Connaught Drive in Newton-le-Willows.

Initially one approached the pensioner's property offering gardening services. The pensioner then locked the door of his house and followed the man into the garden where they were joined by a second man. They spoke for a few minutes before both left the area in a white van.

When the pensioner returned to his home he realised someone had gained entry to the house through a rear door and made a search of the property.

An Audi was also seen close to the house and also parked in alleyway on nearby Wargrave Road.

It is not believed that anything was taken but officers are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area of Connaught Drive and may have seen the men, either of the two vehicles, or anyone acting suspiciously, to contact them.

One of the men is described as being aged about 50 and around six feet tall with dark brown hair and a tanned appearance. He was wearing a blue and white checked shirt, black pants and a black shoes.

The second man was about 5ft 8in tall, going bald but with dark hair and wearing a long sleeved white shirt, black pants and black shoes.

The attempted burglary happened at around 4.30pm on Wednesday, May 18.

Detective constable Jeff Huxley said: "Offenders like this think nothing of deliberately targeting elderly people in their own homes and often appear entirely plausible.

"There are some simple steps people can take to help prevent these types of crimes, but I’d also urge residents to look out for elderly or vulnerable neighbours. If you notice someone suspicious in the area, call the police or contact your local neighbourhood policing team for more advice.

"Information from the public is really important for our investigations and every piece of information is looked into so please come forward if you know anything about this matter."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Merseyside Police on 0151 777 6881 or the confidential Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
