A CHOIR is privileged to be performing at St George's Hall as part of celebrations for the Queen's 90th birthday.

The Haydock Male Voice Choir is to sing at the venue this Sunday for the event which forms part of the city of Liverpool's acknowledgements of the occasion.

The Gala Concert will see the group perform alongside Northop Silver Band and classical soloist Stephanie Guidera.

The group rehearses twice a week and performs at concerts at a variety of venues across the area.

It also held a recent open evening welcoming new members as it looks to continue its rich history which spans more than 90 years.

"It's just a privilege to be asked to take part in the Queen's 90th birthday and the men are looking forward to it," said musical director Dan Craddock, who is only the choir's tenth conductor since its formation in 1923.

"It's brilliant and Haydock is lucky, it has got a 93-year history. We have young lads like Tom Loughlin who is with us on the day and he's singing with us at St Helens town hall on the 28th.

"And we also have guys who have been there for 50 or 60 years."

Dan added: "We're trying to do things differently and change the image. We're going to get rid of the red jackets and have a fresher look."

The choir normally meets two times a week every Tuesday at Haydock Conservative Club and on Friday evenings at English Martyrs Church, Piele Road.
