DE LA SALLE School is open as normal today as planned teachers' strikes were postponed until next month by the NASUWT union.

Members of the union walked out last Thursday (April 28) and Tuesday (May 3) as part of a series of six strikes over a dispute over a pay rise.

However, actions which were planned for today (May 5) and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week will now take place on June 7, 9, 14 and 15 instead, the NASUWT confirmed due to the proximity to GCSE exams.

The row arose after the school governing body decided not to award a discretionary pay increase of two per cent to a small number of teachers who are on the top of the main pay scale. All teaching staff have been given a one percent rise.

Many parents had reacted with anger to the first two strikes due to the closeness to pupils' exams and the school being in special measures.

Head teacher John Toal has issued a letter to parents informing them the school will open as normal on the original strike dates.

A spokesperson for NASUWT said the strikes have been postponed due to the upcoming exams but stressed that the dispute had not yet been resolved.

"We have rescheduled the strikes because of exams. The dispute has not been resolved and we will continue to find a resolution to it."
