A YOUNG woman has died following a collision earlier this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the junction of Birchley Road and Martindale Road, where Moss Bank approaches Billinge, shortly before 12.30pm following reports of a collision between a Peugeot 406 and a woman pedestrian.

Police and ambulance officers attended and the woman's injuries subsequently proved fatal.

The identity of the woman is to be confirmed but police say she was in her late 20s to early 30s.

A force spokesman said an off duty nurse stopped to give medical help but it is understood the woman died at the scene.

Road closures remain in place on Carr Mill Road at the junction of Moss Bank Road and Trent Road, off Carr Mill Road towards Billinge.

The driver of the car stopped at the scene and is assisting police with their enquiries but has not been arrested.

POLICE are at the scene of a "serious road traffic collision" in Moss Bank in which a woman pedestrian has been injured.

Several road have been closed around the scene of the incident at the junction of Moss Bank Road and Birchley Road.

The driver of a silver Peugeot car which was in collision with the woman, stopped at the scene. It is understood that the air ambulance has also been called out.

The extent of the woman's injuries is not known at this stage.
