AS he prepares to take on the St Helens 10k this weekend – backed by a small army of supporters – Tony Barrow is approaching the challenge with characteristic determination.

The father-of-two was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain tumour earlier last year but his fighting spirit and bravery continues to astound friends and family.

Since his diagnosis there have been a number of events to raise cash so that Tony, 44, the son of Tony Barrow senior who played for Saints during the 60s, can explore alternative treatments to add to the care he currently receives.

And on Sunday around 30 supporters will tackle the 10k raising funds for the Tony Barrow Testimonial Fund.

After being given the thumbs up from medical experts to run, the former Swinton and Oldham rugby league player explained why he is determined to take part.

“I have always pushed myself. This will be my fourth 10k and I want to push myself in this because of everything that has happened. For myself it is a test of my own mental strength. Since my last opera - tion in January this was something to aim for. So I have to prove to myself that I can do it.

“I want to do it for all the people who have worked hard for me. They have all gone that extra mile for me so I will for them. I am not the type to feel sorry for myself.”

Tony said he was surprised by the amount of people running the 10k to support him: “I’m amazed.I was shocked because I thought it was just a handful of people. I had no idea so many people were doing it.

"I want to thank each of them. It’s fantastic the way everybody from the start has helped me along the way.

“And that’s people in general not just the hospitals but people in general all over St Helens who have helped keep me mentally strong.”
