EMERGENCY services are still at the scene where a man fell to his death this morning on the M62.

Several motorists called 999 at 9.45am to report that a man was spotted lying in the westbound carriageway underneath a bridge between junctions 7 and 6 close to Rainhill Stoops.

Officers from Merseyside Police and the North West Motorway Patrol Group attended along with paramedics but the man was confirmed dead at the scene.

A significant length of the west bound carriageway was closed as were a number of A roads leading onto the motorway from the surrounding area including Watkinson Way in Widnes and Hall Lane in the Rainhill/Cronton area.

St Helens Council said Hall Lane in Rainhill is expected to be closed until later this afternoon at the bridge passing over the motorway.

Investigations are underway to establish the full circumstances as to how the man came to be in the carriageway.

Police are currently trying to identify the man and notify his next of kin.

A police spokesman has asked that motorists stuck in the traffic congestion to be patient while the incident remains ongoing.

Diversions are being put in place and drivers are being urged to monitor traffic information in the media.

Anyone intending to travel west bound along the M62 between Cheshire and Merseyside is advised to find an alternative route.

The road closures are expected to remain in place for approximately four to five hours. Further traffic updates will be issued later.
