A YOUTH group is able to expand its range of activities thanks to a grant of more than £14,000.

Newton Boys and Girls Club received the grant from The UPS Foundation which aims to help build stronger and more resilient communities.

The money will be used for the club's Step Forward project and will go towards the cost of the refurbishment of the sports hall, installation of a security system and purchase of DJ and football equipment.

The work on the sports hall will include markings for a new basketball and badminton court and football pitch. The DJ equipment will teach the youngsters a new set of skills allowing them to hold music events throughout the year.

Some of the money will also be used to buy equipment to set up a recording studio. The grant will help secure the future of the club in providing opportunities for young people in Newton.

Victoria Musk, centre manager at the club, said: "We are overjoyed. The grant will make a huge difference to the club and our members. Now we can extend the range of activities we have to offer and the young people of Newton will benefit greatly from this opportunity. It's fantastic and we can't thank The UPS Foundation enough."

Established in 1951 and based in Atlanta in the US The UPS Foundation identifies specific areas where it can impact on social issues.

Eduardo Martinez president of the foundation said: "The UPS Foundation is honoured to support the Newton Boys and Girls Club's efforts to provide a fun, safe place for children to take part in various activities, learn new skills while building their confidence and making new friends.

"Our goal is to fund powerful programs that make a lasting difference to the global community."
