ST HELENS College is preparations to launch a £3m Logistics Academy has been given added momentum after it was selected as one of the region's approved training centres.

From this month, the college has launched Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport courses.

Next year, in partnership with Knowsley Community College, it will open the academy in a project approved by the Liverpool City Region's growth deal fund.

A long-term goal of St Helens economic chiefs is for the borough to build a reputation as a logistics hub.

Mike Kelly, head of business and professional studies at university centre St Helens, said: "I am extremely pleased that we have become a Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) approved centre.

"We are only one of a handful of education institutions in the North West offering CILT approved qualifications. The logistics sector is currently suffering a skills shortage so these new courses will also allow us to meet employers' needs in line with the demands from new Liverpool City Region Superport."

CILT UK is the independent professional body for those involved with logistics, supply chains and all transport throughout their careers.

St Helens College is offering short taster courses in warehousing and logistics for those considering a career in this growing industry. Formal qualifications will include level 1 that are designed to give people an insight into the logistics sector, levels 2 and 3 certificates in logistics and transport and a higher level 5 diploma in logistics and transport that will be taught at the University Centre in St Helens.

If you are interested in CILT qualifications or a taster session drop into the enrolment and information event on Monday, January 11 from 5pm to 7pm. Alternatively contact Tracey Boardman on 0800 99 66 99 or enquiries@sthelens.ac.uk.
