A TEAM from the Red Cross has teamed up with primary schools to form a dawn patrol, a group which helps older people who may be lonely or ill.
The aim is to teach young people to understand the needs of the elderly, reduce the number of accidents in the home and be better members of the community.
They also help in other ways by giving advice to reduce fuel poverty, home improvements and encouragement to contact their doctors if the older person is unwell.
The dawn patrol sends out a health visitor to offer advice on leading healthier lifestyles and a dedicated support at home coordinator who helps with shopping, hospital arrangements and getting access to vital services.
Pupils at Wargrave Primary in Newton, who are part of the scheme, recently held a coffee morning for older members of the community. The schoolchildren took a lead in organising the event, including refreshments and entertainment followed by a quiz.
