STUDENTS at Cowley have been taught new skills which could potentially save a life.

Whiston Hospital ran a series of events to raise awareness of CPR, called 'Start a Heart'.

It is estimated just five per cent of resuscitation attempts are successful if carried out be a member of the public.

In an effort to improve this statistic, Jane Carnall, resuscitation officer at St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trusts volunteered to visit Cowley International College on Hard Lane to raise awareness among young people.

There are more than 300,000 cardiac arrests outside hospital each year but less than one in ten survive to be discharged from hospital. The aim of the campaign was to give people the skills and confidence to step in and help.
