PUPILS at Broad Oak Primary School soaked their teachers with ice cold water in support of six-year-old Alex Prescott, who is fighting cancer.

The Brunswick Street school held a series of fundraising activities last week, including three after-school discos with raffles whose lucky winners were chosen to pour buckets of water over staff at the end of the school week.

And Alex himself got to drench the headteacher.

The school raised over £1,600 for CLIC Sargent, a children's cancer charity that has supported year 2 pupil Alex as he battles Pre B Lymphoblastic Lymphoma, a type of blood cancer.

Alex was diagnosed with the illness in August and has since undergone extensive treatment to help him beat the tumour.

This Saturday (October 24) Alex's mum Michelle, 29, will be taking part in her own fundraising event by shaving off all of her hair at Our Lady's Social Club in Parr between 1 and 6pm.

Michelle, who is also mum to one-year-old Leo and 10-month-old James, decided to have her head shaven after seeing Alex lose his hair.

She told the Star: "Although I don't feel the pain Alex endures from day to day, I can support him by shaving my hair off too."

Broad Oak's headteacher Melanie Hignett, who was drenched by Alex, said: "As part of our Broad Oak family ethos, we decided to hold a

fundraising week to show that we are fully behind Alex as he overcomes his illness.

"He is a courageous little boy and it was heart-warming to see him with such a big, cheeky smile on his face, even if he was soaking me with

freezing cold water!

"I'd like to thank Morrisons at Baxters Lane for supplying us with buckets and ice and Terryokee Entertainment for DJing at our school discos."
