A 26-YEAR-OLD man has been jailed for a "brutal and sustained attack" on his ex-partner and a six-year-old girl.

Christopher Potts, 26, of Bradlegh Road, Newton-le-Willows was jailed for six years at Liverpool Crown Court after admitting to the attack which took place in a property in Newton-le-Willows on July 3 of this year.

He was sentenced to six years for a Section 18 wounding on his his former partner which included the use of an ornament and glasses and left her with multiple injuries.

He was also sentenced to 12 months - to run concurrent - for actual bodily harm against a six-year-old girl who he kicked on the head after she tried to intervene.

Speaking after the case, Detective Constable Colette Robinson stressed that help was on offer for victims of domestic abuse.

She said: "No one should ever have to suffer in silence, or feel that they are alone. There is a great deal of professional advice and support out there for people in unhappy, unhealthy, confrontational relationships and these are available free of charge.

"Whether you are a man or a woman, you should not have to suffer or endure verbal or physical abuse from a partner or relative. Victim Care Merseyside can tell you when to get the right kind of support for you and I would urge anyone experiencing these kind of issues not to suffer in silence but instead speak out.

“There is no place in our communities for people who commit such violent and horrendous crime against their partner and this sentence reflects the severity of the offence and how seriously police and the courts take it. While it cannot undo what has been done, I hope the sentence given today will in time give the victims and their family some comfort.

“I’d like to thank the investigation team and the Crown Prosecution Service for their hard work in bringing this case to court.”
