A MAN'S jaw was broken in an assault which took place in Westfield Street in the early hours.

Police are appealing witnesses to come forward following the unprovoked incident. 

The attack happened at 4am on Sunday, September 20 when the victim was walking toward a taxi rank. The attacker approached from behind and punched him, knocking him to the floor.

The offender then left on foot along an alleyway in the direction of NatWest Bank on Ormskirk Street. 

The victim was taken to hospital where he received treatment for a fractured jaw and misaligned teeth. He has since been discharged. 

A full investigation has been launched and officers are appealing to anyone with information to come forward. 

DC Mark Williams from Merseyside Police said: "This was a senseless and unprovoked attack on a young man who had been walking along the road with a friend. 

"Although it was in the early hours of the morning it was close to a taxi rank and it is possible someone might have seen something. I would appeal to anyone with information to call the police as you could really help the investigation.”
