POLICE have issued these CCTV images of a man they want to speak to in connection with the assault of a woman in the town centre.

The incident, which left the victim with face, head and neck injuries, happened on Westfield Street at around 3am on Friday, 7 August.

It is believed the victim had been assaulted by another woman, resulting in her being knocked to the ground.

While on the floor, a man then approached her and stamped on her head.

Detectives from Merseyside Police have explored CCTV footage and it is believed a number of people may have been in the area at the time and may have witnessed the assault.

Officers would like to speak to the man in the photograph as they believe he could help with their enquiries.

The victim has recovered from her injuries but still has contusions to her head, swelling to the back of her head and lacerations to the face.

DC Tracy Awbery said: "This was a particularly nasty assault on a woman who was lying defenceless after being knocked to the floor. Thankfully the victim wasn't badly hurt but we are keen to speak to the man in the photograph as we believe he may be able to help.

"We would also appeal to anyone who was in the area of Westfield Street in the early hours of Friday, August 7 and who may have information about this incident to contact us."
