GREEN-FINGERED residents promoted the benefits of homegrown food as part of a national campaign.
Havannah Lane Allotment, in Parr hosted its annual day to celebrate National Allotment Week which aims to get more people involved in the home-grown fun.
Activities included a tombola, face-painting and many cake, fruit and vegetable stalls manned by plot owners selling the 'fruits' of their labours.
Mayor and mayoress, Cllrs Steve and Lynn Glover, and Parr councillors Keith Roberts and Andy Bowden were among those present on the day which raises awareness of the nutritional benefits of home-grown produce, and positive effects on physical and mental wellbeing.
Cllr Glover said: “Aside from delicious, additive-free and cost-effective food, allotments also produce a wonderful community spirit, which is certainly shared by everyone at Havannah Lane. I’d encourage more people to get involved – growing your own produce is an incredibly rewarding experience for all ages.”
There are 17 council-owned allotments across the borough and to be added to waiting lists for up to three, contact 01744 676789 or contactcentre@sthelens.gov.uk
