AT the age of 91 Gladys Kearns has plenty to stories to share when turning back the clock on her life – ranging from working through World War Two to serving up meals to football icons such as Sir Bobby Charlton and Matt Busby.

Now she has another tale to add to her collection after finally winning a competition following decades of submitting entries.

Gladys was picked out of the hat as the winner of the Star's OD's Jewellers competition and is now the owner of a Hugo Boss watch

Gladys commonly known as 'Glad' to her family and friends, said: "It was a beautiful surprise. I've always done competitions and I thought I'll never win anything so when I got the call I was very surprised.

"My dad was actually a watch-maker for a while at Prescot watchmakers."

Gladys, 91, is originally from Prescot and currently lives in Rodney Street. She was married to husband Bill for 46 years and is also a great-grandmother.

She has enjoyed a varied working life and tested electric cables during the Second World War and met Bill through her work.

She has also worked as a cook at Meads, in Portico and then at Cowley Hill where she prepared food for the doctors and nurses. Gladys, who also worked as a nurse in Rainhill, said one of the highlights of her working life was preparing food for football stars including Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Charlton and Matt Busby while at Meads.

"I remember Matt Busby came over and thanked me for looking after them all, it was great."

Gladys spends her spare time writing, something which she has done throughout her life, with notepads full of stories and poems she has written over the years.

"I have been writing since I was a child and when I was 12 I won half a crown which was a lot to us as we didn't have anything in those days. I called the story The White Slaves of England about how the workers dug up the roads and ditches and worked down the pit. I write about anything and everything and have pages and pages."
