CHURCH Square is to be filled with a cacophony of music relating to some of the town's most topical issues.

Artist duo French and Mottershead have undergone a research mission to capture a sense of the borough’s topical affairs and relay them in 16 bugle calls.

The project, named Brass Calls and part of the Heart of Glass, is made up of short musical pieces that will be designed to call on people to take action.

The work will aim to fill Church Square with sudden, short, brilliant music for passers-by doing their shopping and walking.

Working with composer Adam DJ Taylor, the calls have been created from gathering personal tales and local phrases, which have been turned into musical scores performed and recorded by The Haydock Band.

Issues including zero-hour contracts, town centre skateboarding, the Hardshaw Centre benches and Saints are on the agenda, along with personable tales from St Helens people.

The bugle calls will be accompanied by placards held up with printed lyrics.

“We have enjoyed working on Bugle Call project as this has taken us outside our comfort zone of traditional brass music," said Lisa Forbes, contest secretary of The Haydock Band, one of the oldest community organisations in the borough.

"We have enjoyed the experience of working with French and Mottershead researching ideas and with the composer to perform a range of bugle calls relating to St Helens town."

The project takes place on Friday, August 7 and Saturday 8 with the calls to be played over speakers around Church Square.
