ST HELENS Canoe club has been causing quite a splash at Carr Mill Dam.

The club, which moved to the dam last year, and encourages both young and old to master the water.

And the club is now set to host its biggest ever Bank Holiday fun day this August to encourage people to pick up their paddles and take to the water.

"We regularly have more than 20 in our sessions and we're in our second year at the dam," said chairman Paul Smee, who did kayaking with the St Helens youth services as a youngster.

"I can't believe the interest that has been generated. We had a fun day at Easter and this is going to be the biggest event. yet.

"There are going to be canoeing sessions on the day and fun and games for all the family."

With various fun activities on the day, there will be three sessions, with the first to be for girls with the club supporting a drive to increase female participation in sport.

"We're having a girls' session to just give them that confidence and to have fun and a laugh," added Vicki Birch, of the club.

The day will be held by the club on Monday, August 31 lasting from 11am to 5pm. Visit www.sthelenscc.co.uk for more information.
