A FIRE engine will be unveiled this weekend in tribute to a much respected firefighter who died aged 50 from bowel cancer in 2013.

David Thomas had served in the fire service across St Helens and Merseyside for 30 years and was described as a legend by colleagues.

At Newton Show this weekend a Dennis Sabre Fire Engine will be unveiled named after Dave who ended his career as watch manager at Parr Stocks.

Danny Murphy from Merseyside Fire and Rescue's Heritage centre said: "Dave did a lot for the community in Newton and we knew him well. He was such a lovely guy and worked hard here. He has a bench dedicated to him near the Rangers' station in Newton and we approached his wife Suzanne to see if we could name a vehicle after him. We also spoke to Newton councillor Seve Gomez-Aspron who was supportive. The fire engine is part of the reserve fleet and will primarily go to shows and events."
