RUGBY League fans took to the streets ahead of Saints' match against Hull KR last Friday as a 120-mile walk celebrating the sport's history finished in St Helens.

The 'Founders Walk' took place over six days across the sport's traditional heartlands taking in the homes of the 22 original members of the Northern Union to honour the 120th anniversary since rugby league's inception.

Organised by charity Rugby League Cares the walk started in Hull on Sunday, July 19 travelling over the Pennines, finishing up in St Helens last Friday.

Fans were invited to take part in the walk along with rugby league personalities, with each day's route split into smaller community walks.

The final day saw the walk start from Warrington to Widnes before the final leg in St Helens, which began at Sherdley Park on Friday afternoon finishing up at Langtree Park.

Saints chairman Eamonn McManus and chief executive Mike Rush were among those to join in the local stretch along with ex-player Paul Sculthorpe and RFL chief executive Nigel Wood who completed all of the journey.

Ex-Saints prop Adam Fogarty, now an actor, also joined the march.

Other dignitaries included mayor and mayoress Cllrs Stephen and Lynn Glover, Cllr Andy Bowden, St Helens Council chief executive Mike Palin, who is also the founder of amateur club Bury Broncos.

The event aimed to raise £120,000 for worthy charitable causes within the game.
