A FIRE in a Grade II listed building is believed to have been started deliberately, the fire service said today.

Three fire engines - from St Helens, Eccleston and Newton-le-Willows stations - were sent to the blaze at Reflection Court in Canal Street shortly before 9.15pm on Thursday, as reported by the Star last week.

Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose jets to tackle the fire in a flat.

Firefighters also carried out a search to make sure no-one was inside.

Watch Manager Jason Hannah, who attended the call-out with firefighters from Eccleston Community Fire Station, said: “Smoke alarms in the property alerted neighbours to the fire who then called the fire and rescue service.

“Firefighters worked quickly to contain and extinguish the fire.

“We advise people have working smoke alarms on each level of their home.”

A statement from Merseyside Fire and Rescue service read: "Following an investigation, it is suspected that the fire was started deliberately. There was severe fire damage to half of one of the rooms at the flat."

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact Merseyside Police on 101.
