A TOUCHING ceremony was held to honour this year's Armed Forces Day.

Former servicemen and women joined current personnel, cadets and various local veterans’ organisations for a parade in Victoria Square on Saturday, June 27.

A commemorative service took place by the cenotaph led by Reverend Dr Chris Stafford, from All Saints, Newton to reflect on the sacrifices made by armed forces and veterans.

Mayor and mayoress Cllrs Stephen and Lynn Glover and the borough's MPs Conor McGinn and Marie Rimmer were part of the crowed which also included representatives from the Royal Artillery and Parachute Regiment Reserves, the combined Royal Marine, Sea, Army and Air Cadet Forces, the Standard Bearers and Veterans of the local Armed Forces Associations.

Meanwhile, the St Helens Sea Cadets held a celebration at Mill Street barracks through the day.

An in Newton-le-Willows a commemorative picnic took place at Mesnes Park attended by army and sea cadet forces, with brass band accompaniment, ice cream and hot food.

Mayor Cllr Glover said: “I was honoured to be joined by such a dedicated group of armed forces personnel, cadets and veterans.

"I wish to express my thanks to all the people who volunteered to take part, and to the residents who showed their support.

“It’s of utmost importance that we take the time to remember the sacrifices made by our brave serving men and women.

"But the event is also one of celebration, in applauding and taking pride in everything the armed forces community does for us.”
