SECONDARY and sixth form students explored the meaning of British values at an event held at Langtree Park on Tuesday (June 30).

Nearly 150 pupils and students from 36 schools and colleges around the Liverpool Archdiocese area gathered for the day. Those participating included four students each from St Augustine's, De La Salle, Hope Academy, St Cuthbert's and Carmel College.

The pupils were asked directly how they would like to see national values celebrated within schools following government requirement for schools in the country to promote fundamental British values.

Speeches were given to the learners by Tim Warren, director of schools and colleges for the archdiocese and head teacher at Southport's Christ The King, Jim Lancaster.

"It has been a fantastic response from students today," said Paul Greenall, partnership director of the archdiocese.

"They have been doing a number of tasks that will be used in their schools to create awareness of what British values are and they have put together a number of things such as presentations which can be used in assembles and specific focus days.

"We are looking for their input for the best way and look at how this fits with our Catholic values."

Sixth form student Harriet McCoombe added: "It has been really interesting, we were asked to make a promotional video about British values.

"We have been getting different viewpoints from teachers and range of people as to what they think British values are."
