THE leader of St Helens Council, Councillor Barrie Grunewald, has been voted the new deputy chair of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.
The combined authority leads strategically on transport, economic development and regeneration in the City Region.
Councillor Grunewald said: “I’m delighted that I’ll be able to play an even bigger role in the work of the Combined Authority – and appreciate the confidence shown in me by the leaders of the other local authorities across the city region.”
The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, which was created early last year, plays a lead role in economic development, regeneration and housing.
It does not hold powers over St helens Council, which remains independent.
It also provides a framework for economic growth, with clear leadership and quicker decision-making processes.
Councillor Grunewald added: "When I took over as Leader of St Helens Council I made it clear that economic growth and job creation were my top priorities.
"That hasn’t changed – and I’ll be using my new position to promote those goals – for the whole City Region – at every opportunity.”
