POWERS to deal with on-street parking offences Prescot and Whiston such as parking on double yellow lines have been transferred from the police to the council in Knowsley.

In May, the council gained responsibility for on-street parking enforcement in addition to enforcing parking regulations in council-owned car parks.

Parking violations to be dealt with by the authority include parking on double yellow lines, double parking and parking across dropped kerbs.

Lisa Harris, Knowsley's assistant executive director of regeneration and housing, said: "Residents, businesses and visitors to Knowsley will all benefit from these changes as they will help to improve safety for pedestrians and drivers by preventing inconsiderate and dangerous parking.

"The changes will also help to improve traffic flow and road safety and improve access to amenities and public transport."

The council's civil enforcement officers will patrol streets and council-owned car parks and issue fines to any vehicles that are breaking parking regulations.

A spokesperson for Knowsley Council added: "Existing parking rules and regulations are not changing - the only difference is that the council will be responsible instead of Merseyside Police."
