ST HELENS South and Whiston MP Marie Rimmer has paid tribute to Sister Kathleen Duffy, who died last night.
The much-loved figure became a local legend for the care she provided as a nurse at the Providence Hospital.
A raft of tributes and condolences have been made on social media since the news of her death broke out.
The new St Helens South MP Marie Rimmer said: "Sister Duffy, a true legend of our town is loved by so many of us.
"She will be remembered for her services provided in the former Providence Hospital and her professional medical care, her humour, compassion and her Christianity.
"Sister Duffy will be missed for her massive contribution in arranging for our sick people and their families to take part in annual Lourdes Pilgrimages.
"A wonderful woman who has given so much to our town and its people. Thank you Sister Duffy, rest in peace."
