THE mother of a schoolboy who completed a sponsored walk months after major leg surgery said she had "no doubt" that he would achieve the feat.
Kenzie Appleton, eight, finished a 5k sponsored walk at Knowsley Safari Park on Sunday, May 17 without the need of a wheelchair, despite having undergone surgery just before Christmas.
The Sutton Oak Primary School pupil suffers from Perthes Disease, which affects the blood flow to his femur bone.
Having received treatment for the condition for the past four years, the operation was Kenzie's second after first having surgery in 2012.
The surgery saw Kenzie bed-ridden on Christmas Day last year and made finishing the walk his focus during his recovery over the past few months.
And Kenzie, who was joined by his family on the day of the walk, raised money for Alder Hey Hospital who have cared for him over the past few years.
"He was adamant that he was going to finish it and he ran to the end," said mum Tara Hewitt, 25.
"He had to go slowly and I had to beg him to rest. We knew that he'd be able to do it, we had no doubt.
"He's been brilliant and if it wasn't for him taking it so well I don't think we'd have coped as well as we have done.
"He's just got on with it and wanted to help others. He is already planning something else now"
Currently, Kenzie has raised more than £400 for his walk. People can donate on www.justgiving.com/Tara-Ste-Appleton
