AN ambitious arts project which will see a park named after a prominent St Helens figure of the past or present is beginning to grab public’s attention.

Your Name Here saw a three-metre neon sign placed above the town hall to signal the start of its competition.

The campaign will see Lyons Yard, on Ravenhead Greenway Park, renamed after someone with a connection to St Helens.

Participants can nominate the name of a person the park should be named after with up to 150 words explaining why.

They can also accompany their explanation with a story, drawing, painting, video, photo, sound recording, or even an object. The named person needs to have a strong connection with St Helens, either historically or modern. Organisers say it could be a friend, family member or local hero.

Saints star James Roby, who will be one of the judges for the competition, was at the launch event.

The panel, which will also include Afghanistan war veteran Andy Reid as well as Johnny Vegas, will select the winner in late summer.

Organisers say the past week’s launch, which involved a radio, print, social media and road signage campaign, has sparked interest.

Your Name Here, part of the Heart of Glass, is led by artist Joshua Sofaer.

He said: “The aim of Your Name Here is to get people talking about who is important to the people of St Helens. I want to help celebrate the residents of St Helens in an extraordinary way, exploring the themes of citizenship, history, family and civic pride.

"I hope it gets conversation going about who our role models are within the community and thinking creatively about the people in their lives.”

The park will be renamed in late summer, with the new identity becoming part of the town’s fabric, maps and park signage. An exhibition of leading entries will also be displayed in the town centre in September.
