THE poignant First World War stories of soldiers from Whiston and Prescot can be accessed by the touch of a button thanks to the efforts of a year-long project.

The Preserving the Past with the Present, for the Future website was created by Knowsley Council, Prescot Museum and community groups.

The site contains audio interviews with soldiers from Knowsley as well as photographs and profiles of soldiers who fought in the Great War and subsequent conflicts.

Among them is the tale of Gunner John Parkin, of Grosvener Road, Prescot. He enlisted in the Royal Garrison Artillery and during the war, while stationed in India, introduced football to Turkish Prisoners of War.

His brothers Fred and Joseph were both killed in action, as well as his while his sister Beatrice's fiance, Albert Edward Buckley.

The website is the result of work which took place in the borough throughout 2014, the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War.

The website can be found on: preservingthepast.prescotmuseum.org.uk. Anyone wishing to view the archive held at the 33 Signals Squadron can make an appointment via the website, or contact Major Robert Dobson on 0151 481 4931.
