JON Wilkin raised his game in the kitchen by triumphing at a primary school's Red Nose Day bake-off.
Jon went head to head with teacher John Pape at District Primary School Newton school, making a cake with a ‘Gruffalo’ theme, based on artwork in Julia Donaldson’s children’s book, in a bid to win the coveted Golden Spoon.
The literary theme was chosen in reference to the school’s ‘Year of Reading’ project, which encourages the pupils’ love of books.
Once the flour had settled, Jon’s efforts were judged by the children to be the tastiest looking of the two.
Meanwhile, parents and pupils were invited to join in the cake-making and asked to send in their own literary-inspired designs.
School cook Sharron Johnson and the manageress of the nearby Morrisons Earlestown store, judged 96 entries in ‘Family Decorated’ and ‘Child Unaided’ categories.
And the top five will be treated to a trip to the Pot, Kettle Black, owned by Jon and team-mate Mark Flanagan, for tea and cakes.
The Saints captain’s winning cake was auctioned off, bringing The District Primary’s Comic Relief donation total to £110.
