POLICE are investigating allegations a 94-year-old Second World War veteran was kicked in the back by a youth as he walked through Church Square in St Helens town centre.

The assault allegedly happened when the elderly man challenged a group of teenagers gathered near benches in the pedestrianised square after they had been involved in an altercation with a woman in her 60s.

It is claimed that following an exchange of words, a teenager headed after the veteran and kicked him in the back.

Officers later arrested a 14-year-old boy, who is from St Helens, on suspicion of common assault.

Following questioning the suspect was released on bail, which he is due to answer next week.

The alleged incident happened at about 6.30pm on Thursday, February 19.

Police released details after the Star was contacted by readers last week.

The 94-year-old is not believed to be seriously injured but he was left shaken and the episode draws into the spotlight the debate surrounding youngsters who gather in Church Square.

The amount of skateboarders congregating there continues to be an issue that is scrutinised by the police and St Helens Council, amid concerns there is a risk of accidents to elderly people and that the activity leaves some people feeling intimidated.

However, there is no suggestion that these allegations involved a skateboarder and it is understood the authorities believe there is a much wider issue to address surrounding the behaviour of some of the different groups of youths who congregate in both Church Square and the town centre on evenings.

It is understood police have been reviewing CCTV cameras of the alleged assault.
