POLICE want to speak to a man captured on CCTV after a member of rail staff was punched at Earlestown train station.

Officers believe the man in the image could have vital information about the incident which occurred at 6.10am on Friday, February 27.

Investigating officer PC Michael Woodward said: "A man became involved in an altercation with a guard onboard a train travelling between Newton-le-Willows and Earlestown after he failed to produce a valid ticket for his journey.

"As the guard walked away the man punched him in the back of the head before forcing open the doors of the train at Earlestown Station.

"The guard was simply doing his job when this unprovoked assault took place.

"Acts of violence like this will not be tolerated on the railway."
