A COUNCILLOR is taking legal advice after saying an imposter used his name to make posts on social media including a comment referring to cyclists as "*obs".

Labour councillor Seve Gomez-Aspron denied involvement in a Facebook discussion about two cyclists "blocking a driver".

In the online thread, which began after a friend of the Cllr Gomez-Aspron posted a photo of cyclists riding side by side on a narrow road, a post made in the name Seve Gomez-Aspron remarks about “*obs wobbling in the gutter on a push bike!”.

A series of comments criticising cyclists were made in the name 'Seve Gomez Aspron'.

The Newton-le-Willows ward councillor, 29, says he is seeking advice from the legal team at St Helens Council.

He said: “There has been an issue with people setting up fake profiles. It’s definitely not me.

"It feels like a bit of a witch hunt, but other political parties have been subject to the same on Twitter. It seems that some people are using it as a political tool.

"Twitter is a lot easier to control due to the bespoke @name, but I will have to consider my future on Facebook carefully."

He added: "I'm not concerned as those who know me, and the public, know who I am and how hard I work for the borough.

"Councillors should always be contacted by official contact methods to ensure it’s actually them.”

The councillor says he has now deactivated his Facebook account. The account linked to the comments also no longer exists.

Cllr Gomez-Aspron has written to St Helens Council monitoring officer, expressing his concerns.

In January the councillor was told to apologise to a resident after being accused of using grossly offensive language on Facebook.

He had ended a conversation with a woman by writing ‘See you next Tuesday’, abbreviating it into text speak, using ‘C’ and ‘U’ for the first two words and a capital ‘N’ at the beginning of the word ‘next’.

The council’s standards committee was told the expression is widely known to be a euphemism for a derogatory four-letter word.

Cllr Gomez-Aspron denied knowing the expression could be offensive.
