A PROPOSAL to demolish a metal recycling plant and build hundreds of homes alongside a mixed-use zone in Bold has been submitted to St Helens Council.

European Metal Recycling Ltd (EMR) is planning to convert the site of the plant, former British Rail Club, railway embankment and Penketh Industrial Estate into a residential area, with green spaces and other facilities such as shops.

The proposals seek outline planning permission to build 368 homes.

The location, in Reginald Road, covers 10.66 hectares and as well as the housing, could include shops, cafes and takeaways or larger establishments like a health centre or day nursery.

Issues including flood risk, protected species, important habitats and contamination are being investigated by developers.

The effect of the development on transport is also being looked at.

Letters have been sent to residents living near to the site and two engagement events were held for members of the community in 2014. According to EMR, of those who filled in feedback, 31 supported the plans, five were undecided and one was against it.

Members of the public are invited to send their opinions of the proposal to the council by March 19, 2015.
