A PLUMBING student who was released by Saints last summer is celebrating after being picked to go on tour to Italy with the England Lions rugby league team.

Danny Lynch, 16, from Haydock, says being let go by the club he supported as a boy has made him determined to prove that he could make the grade.

The former Haydock High pupil, who plays prop for Blackbrook, said: “I played for Saints under 15s and 16s but was released last June. It just made me work harder.

“I am proud of myself. I’m really looking forward to the trip. I have been to France before on tour but this will be a different experience.

Danny still harbours an ambition to play rugby league professionally but said he wants to continue his plumbing course.

“I understand that I need an alternative career in case it doesn’t go to plan. I enjoy plumbing. It’s a good trade and I thought I would give it a try.

“I hope to progress to level two in September and if a career in rugby doesn’t work out I would be very happy with a career in plumbing.”

Jon Brown, lecturer in plumbing at Warrington College said: “Daniel is a fantastic student and I am delighted he has been selected to play for England Lions. Playing on tour in Italy will be a great experience for him and it’s good to see his hard work and talent has been recognised.”
