PLANS to create new pitches for a junior football club have moved a step further.

Officials from Earlestown Athletic have now submitted two planning applications to St Helens Council in connection with facilities for the site at Harrison Way in Newton-le-Willows.

The applications involve a proposed car park for 40 vehicles, drainage issues and siting for a toilet cabin and storage containers. The club, formed in 1997, is a progressive member of the Warrington Junior League.

Club chairman Alan Syddall said: “We are currently playing at five venues.

“As well as building the pitches themselves we’ll need other facilities on site.

“If this goes through planning, we’ll have to maintain the pitches ourselves.

“However, the important thing is offering good facilities to the youngsters of the town.”

He expects the plans will lead to an increase in the number of players, with more pupils signing up after inter-school competitions are hosted there.

If the plans are approved, it is hoped that work on the development will begin this spring, with the pitches ready for use in the September 2016 season.
