A FAMILY has vented their fury after burglars smashed into the home of 93-year-old great-grandmother while she was recovering in hospital from serious injuries suffered in a mobility scooter crash.

Evelyn Barrow was left with a fractured femur and several broken ribs when her scooter was in collision with a car on Thatto Heath Road, Thatto Heath.

The widow was taken to Fazakerly Hospital in a serious condition and within 24 hours crooks had broken into her home nearby, stealing two televisions.

Her family, who are “fuming” over the break in, is convinced the burglars knew what had happened and that the house would be an easy target.

One relative, who has spoken to the Star but asked not to be named, said: “How low can you get? We are all sure that they knew she had been in the accident earlier that day.

“She has eight children, the youngest is 71, and everyone is rallying round and at her bedside. Everyone is beside themselves.

“She is well known in the area and is extremely independent.

"You would never believe she is 93-years-old. She goes to bingo three times a week.

“On the day she was hurt she was actually going to see her daughter. She was on the scooter because she won’t get on the bus.

“If she’d have been in the house at the time she’d have given them a whack. They smashed the back door down and took the main TV and a smaller television.

“These people are just the lowest of the low.”

A police spokesman said officers appealing for witnesses following the burglary. They said the crooks struck between 10pm on Wednesday, February 18 and 9.30am on Thursday, February 19.

DI Martin Earl, from St Helens CID, said: “We know how devastating it can be when your house is burgled and we are doing everything we can to arrest the person or people responsible.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to reassure people that we take domestic burglaries in St Helens extremely seriously and we run regular operations to target known offenders and also offer crime prevention advice.

“I’d also appeal to anyone who saw anything suspicious or people with any information about this incident, to call officers.”

Mrs Barrow, who was injured in the collision at 11.40am on Wednesday, February 18, remains in hospital where she has undergone an operation to have plates inserted into her hip, leg and ribs.
