FORGET the Rumble in the Jungle – this weekend sees a real clash of the titans when Johnny Vegas faces former Saints skipper Paul Sculthorpe for a ping pong ding-dong.

The charity tournament is the brainchild of Andy Reid who will be hosting the event at his Cinema Bar on Duke Street this Sunday (February 1), with all money going towards the Steve Prescott Foundation.

He said: “I was chatting to Johnny Vegas on the way back from London and told him we had a ping pong table in the bar and I invited him down for a couple of games.

“Some time later I was talking to Scully and told him about the table too.

“Then I thought about getting them together; one because it would be quite funny, and secondly to raise money for the Steve Prescott Foundation.

“We will be opening the bar early and hosting a knock out tournament and whoever wins will play the winner of Johnny and Scully’s match which should be around 8.30pm.

“Entry to the bar is free but costs £3.20 to take part in the competition.

“Bartons is sponsoring the event and Jo (Bartons MD) will be bringing some hampers down and offering canapés.”

Andy, who is expecting a bumper crowd on the night, said the cinema’s ping pong table is proving to be a popular alternative to pool on Wednesday nights.

“It’s much more of a laugh than pool,” he insisted.

Anyone wanting to limber up for the tournament can get down to the Cinema Bar tonight (Thursday) from 6pm.
