A MORRISONS store in the borough is facing the threat of closure.

Proposals to shut the supermarket on Haydock Street, in Earlestown, have been confirmed although the chain stress that no formal decision has yet been made.

A Morrisons spokesperson said: “We have looked extremely carefully at whether the store can be turned around but unfortunately we cannot see a way of making it viable.

“We are therefore proposing its closure.

"We are consulting with colleagues and unions to reduce the risk of redundancies and we are looking at ways of redeploying colleagues around our business.”

The company, which has stores on Boundary Road, St Helens and Baxters Lane, Sutton did not say how many local jobs are on the line.

The proposal comes after the Yorkshire-based chain announced that 10 loss-making stores would be axed across the country, putting more than 400 jobs at risk.

Morrisons decided to part company with its chief executive Dalton Philips and has appointed Andrew Higginson as chairman to oversee Morrisons’ push for commercial revival.

"In the next chapter of Morrisons development, we need to return the business to growth. The board believes this is best done under new leadership,” said Mr Higginson.

“A business needs trading momentum and we want to restore that sooner rather than later."
